U.S., Canada Trade Lumber Dispute
Heightens with More Tariffs

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced late last month that preliminary anti-dumping duties as high as 7.7 percent would be levied on Canadian producers of softwood lumber, the latest move in a contentious trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada. The move follows an April decision to apply countervailing tariffs of up to 24.1 percent on shipments from Canadian lumber companies. This most recent move in the ongoing trade dispute comes after the U.S. lumber industry filed a petition last November asking for duties, alleging Canadian wood is highly subsidized and imports are harming U.S. mills and workers.
