EWTA Votes to Add New Members
to Advisory Committee
 
 
At its fall meeting in Bonita Springs, Fla., the EWTA Advisory Committee voted to add three new members to the committee. Dan Uskoski (Metriguard) and Dale Leeper (Hexion), both formerly at-large members, joined the committee as regular members. Mike Crondahl (Westmill) was added as a new regular member. Three other members replaced outgoing members. From Weyerhaueser, Rick Nelson replaced Jon Rashleigh; from Grenzebach, Charles Shurtliff replaced Don MacHarg; and from Arclin, James Slay replaced Blair Wilding.

Mark Your Calendar: Date Set for
2017 EWTA Info Fair
 
 
It’s not too early to start planning for the 2017 EWTA Info Fair and APA Annual Meeting. This year’s events will be held Oct. 28-31 at the Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa in Huntington Beach, Calif. Early Bird registration for Info Fair will open April 3. For more information, contact Melinda Lilley at mlilley@engineeredwood.org.
 
 
 
Spring Engineered Wood Journal in Production 
 
The Engineered Wood Journal’s spring issue is underway and scheduled to be mailed to members by April. Featured in this issue is EWTA’s annual Business Outlook Survey, as well as a recap of APA’s international activities and a feature on the results of a recent workforce needs survey affecting the wood products industry. The issue will also include the annual EWTA Membership Directory. The deadline for EWTA member inclusion in the directory is Wednesday, Feb. 1. Members can choose to upgrade their complimentary listing with a color logo or an advertisement within the spring issue. Please contact Melinda Lilley at mlilley@engineeredwood.org by Feb. 1 to place your ad and/or add your logo.
 
 
 
New, Returning Members Join EWTA 
 
Two companies—one new and one returning—have recently joined as members of EWTA, bringing the association’s member company count to 114.
  • Taihei Machinery Works LTD of the Aichi prefecture of Japan is a specialized manufacturer of veneer and plywood machinery, including automatic knife grinding and honing machines, horizontal hot presses, veneer jet dryers and veneer stackers.   • Union Pacific Railroad of Omaha, Neb., is a railroad franchise that covers 23 states across the western two-thirds of the U.S. and ships a wide variety of raw materials and finished goods, including lumber and panel products. Surfactor Acquires Firm 
 
Surfactor recently announced that it has acquired L.P. Pacific Firms from Kotkamills Oy of Finland. L.P. Pacific, founded in 1997, is located in Pasir Gudang, Malaysia, and operates two treaters and a resin plant. The company employs approximately 50 people.
 
 
 
Idemitsu Introduces New Product 
 
Idemitsu Lubricants America recently introduced a new long-life fluorinated grease designed for use in high-temperature and high-load roller bearing environments seen in continuous pressing operations. The chemistry of Daphne Flusolex TMEP allows for an extended grease application interval and a reduction in overall grease consumption compared to non-fluorinated greases.
 
 
 
New Dieffenbacher Press Produces First Board 
 
Dieffenbacher announced in a press release that its new continuous CPS+ press, unveiled at the 2015 LIGNA show, has been put into operation. After a seven-month assembly period, the first board was produced last October at Kronospan’s new particleboard plant in Bjelovar, Croatia. The CPS+ technology features thermoactive roll plates that ensure the mats can be heated at an earlier stage.
 
 
 
Hexion Announces New Tech Center 
 
Hexion Inc. recently announced in a press release that it plans to build a new European technology center in Kamp-Lintfort, Germany. The new facility will consolidate activities from several research and development facilities located in nearby Duisburg. The facility includes an existing 15,000-sq-ft building with warehouse and office space as well as a new 17,200-sq-ft laboratory facility. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2018.
 
 
 
LP Announces Management Changes 
 
Louisiana-Pacific Corp. recently announced several internal changes to its leadership team. Jason Ringblom is the new general manager of the company’s OSB business; Neil Sherman is the executive vice-president and general manager of the siding business; Mike Sims is leading the company’s engineered wood products business; and Craig Sichling is now the vice-president of specialty sales and marketing and will lead LP’s siding marketing group.
 
 
 
RoyOMartin Honored as
Manufacturer of the Year
 
 
RoyOMartin recently received an award from the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, recognizing the wood product manufacturer’s investment and achievements in manufacturing at its OSB plant on Oakdale, La., and its plywood and timbers plant in Chopin, La. The company was named Manufacturer of the Year for companies with 100 or more employees. RoyOMartin owner and president Jonathan Martin was the winner of APA’s Bronson J. Lewis Award in 2015, which recognizes individuals for their leadership and contribution to the industry.
 
 
 
AWC/VT Offer Short Course on
Wood Buildings
 
 
The American Wood Council and Virginia Tech are presenting a joint short course called, “Introduction to Design of Wood Buildings Per the 2015 NDS.” The course will be April 10–12 at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va., and will focus on practical code-conforming design of wood structures based on provisions of the 2015 NDS and other AWC standards. EPA Publishes Final Rule on
Formaldehyde Standards
 
 
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last month issued its final rule on formaldehyde standards for composite wood products. The Formaldehyde Emission Standards for Composite Wood Products was published in the Federal Register. Modeled after California’s regulations, the standards become effective nationwide in December 2017. The publication formalizes the law passed in 2010, which established emissions standards for formaldehyde from composite wood products and directed EPA to finalize a rule on implementing and enforcing a number of provisions covering nonstructural composite wood products.
