Call for Entries for the Innovation of the Year Award

Although we are not gathering this fall for the APA Annual Meeting and EWTA Info Fair, the Supplier Awards program will once again proceed. As implemented last year, web-based ballots will be sent electronically to all APA mill managers in late October for voting for the Supplier of the Year and Innovations of the Year Awards.

The EWTA Supplier Awards Program is designed to recognize EWTA member companies that excel in serving their APA member manufacturer customers and developing innovative solutions to processing problems and challenges. The program consists of two components:

Innovation of the Year Award

The Innovation of the Year Award recognizes a company providing a new technology, product or service that has demonstrably reduced production costs, increased productivity, improved product quality or in some other way provided a bottom-line benefit to APA members.

EWTA is now accepting entries for the 2021 Innovation of the Year Award. Visit EWTA Supplier Awards Program for complete details.
Entry deadline is September 1.

Supplier of the Year Awards

Awards are presented in each of EWTA’s three membership categories: Equipment/Tooling, Materials/Supplies and Consulting Services. All EWTA member companies in good standing are eligible to participate.

The winners will be announced in the Engineered Wood Journal, Connections e-newsletter and featured on the EWTA website.

Housing Starts Continue to Run at Healthy Rates

Housing starts in the U.S. and Canada were up in May. In the U.S., starts ran at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.57 million units, up 3.6% from April. New and existing home sales have fallen over the last few months, which is more a story of available inventory than softer demand. Both economies continue to show recovery from the pandemic, as witnessed by gains in employment, consumer spending and industrial production. Inflation measures are showing higher rates of price increases compared to April, especially in commodities and building materials. Yet, the higher inflation rates did not seem to cause concern in the financial markets, as long-term interest rates remained stable over the last four weeks.
The housing report is distributed to current EWTA members each month. Please contact LaDauna Wilson if you would like to receive it.

Glulam Now Qualifies for BioPreferred® Label

APA recently obtained approval for use of the BioPreferred® label on glued laminated beams. With this addition of glulam, the entire scope of products certified by APA are now eligible for the BioPreferred mark. This program, authorized under the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (known as the 2002 Farm Bill), allows products that have been tested for the bio content to display the BioPreferred label. Federal law directs federal agencies to purchase biobased products in categories identified by the USDA. The label, which documents the renewable content found in the product, can be used on product packaging and literature. Go to BioPreferred for additional information.
