EWTA Advisory Committee Meets

The EWTA Advisory Committee met Oct. 28 jointly with the Adhesives and Technology Committee through video conference. New committee members Trevor Wendt, representing Raute, and Mike Cook, representing SparTek Industries, Inc., joined the panel to replace previous representatives from their respective companies.

The committee voted to defer some of the $95,000 budgeted in 2020 for research projects. The hybrid wall project with the University of British Columbia continues, with half of the funding contributed in 2020 and the other half in 2021. A report on the preliminary results will be published in the Autumn Engineered Wood Journal.

The committee finalized the association’s 2021 budget, which was forwarded and approved at the Nov. 12 APA Board of Trustees meeting.

Good News: Housing Starts Climb

Housing starts in the U.S. rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.54 million units in October. The increase was led by single-family construction with starts coming in at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.18 million, the highest monthly starts rate since April 2007. Builder sentiment rose to a record high in the survey conducted earlier this month. New and existing home sales continue to run at a blistering pace, leaving the inventory of homes for sale on a months of supply basis at a record low. The October employment, retail sales and industrial production data point to further recovery in the economy. A near-term concern is that the reimposition of government mandates to close indoor dining and reduce effective capacity in retail and personal services will dampen the rate of economic growth in the fourth quarter.
